Performance Divisions
These divisions feature individual instrumental performance adjudication. Students perform prepared repertoire demonstrating technical proficiency, musical interpretation, and stylistic understanding.
OVERVIEW
The Solo Division is the foundational adjudicated performance category of the festival. Students perform two contrasting selections demonstrating musical interpretation, technique, and stylistic understanding. Participation in the Solo Division is required for entry into certain advanced festival categories such as Piano Competitive and Composer’s Composition.
ELIGIBILITY
• Open to students performing on any instrument included in the festival.
• Participants are entered according to class levels ranging from Class G through Virtuoso.
• Classification is determined by repertoire difficulty and level of musical study.
PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
• Each contestant performs two contrasting selections.
• One piece must be selected from the official test piece list for the instrument and class level.
• The second selection is a choice piece of contrasting style.
• Both selections must be performed during the adjudication.
REPERTOIRE GUIDELINES
• One selection must come from the official test piece list.
• The second selection must provide musical contrast.
• The choice piece may also be taken from the test list if it is from the same level as the required piece.
• A contestant’s choice piece may not appear on a lower level of the test list than the required test piece.
MEMORIZATION REQUIREMENTS
• Both selections must be performed from memory.
• If printed music is used during performance, the contestant forfeits eligibility for a trophy.

TIME ALLOTMENT

Specialty Divisions
These divisions highlight specialized instruments and musical styles that may not fall within the traditional instrumental categories.
OVERVIEW
The Percussion Division allows students to demonstrate technique and musical expression through both drum set and snare drum repertoire.
PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
• Class D through Virtuoso contestants perform:
• one set drum solo
• one snare drum solo• One selection must come from the required list, and the other may be a choice piece.
EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS
• A standard drum set will be provided for Classes G through A.
Provided equipment includes:
• two crash cymbals
• one ride cymbal
• hi-hat
• drummer’s throne
INSTRUMENT POLICIES
• Students in Classes G through A may not bring duplicate drum equipment.
• If additional equipment is required, teachers must contact the festival secretary by July 7.
MARIMBA
• Marimbas are not furnished.
• Contestants must bring their own instrument.

The Hymn / Patriotic Division allows contestants to perform repertoire that reflects traditional sacred and patriotic musical literature. This category provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate musical expression through familiar hymns and patriotic selections while maintaining appropriate technical standards consistent with their level of study.
ELIGIBILITY
• Open to instrumental contestants participating in the festival.
• Contestants should select repertoire consistent with the difficulty level of their Solo Division classification when also entering Solo.
PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
• Contestants must perform two selections.
REPERTOIRE GUIDELINES
• Perform two hymns, two patriotic selections, or one hymn and one patriotic selection.
• No required test piece list is used in this division.
• Repertoire difficulty should be consistent with the contestant’s Solo Division level when also participating in Solo.
MEMORIZATION REQUIREMENTS
• Memorization is not required in this division.
ACCOMPANIMENT REQUIREMENTS
• Live accompaniment must be used when accompaniment is written in the score.
• Pre-recorded accompaniment is not permitted.
• Contestants must bring the original score for the judge as well as their own original music.
TIME ALLOTMENT
Adjudication time follows the general scheduling guidelines used for similar class levels.
AUDIENCE POLICY
Audience policies follow the festival’s general audience guidelines. Closed auditions may not be requested.
AWARDS & SPECIAL RULES
Contestants are evaluated through the festival adjudication scoring system and may receive ratings and awards according to festival criteria.

The Pop / Blues / Jazz Division provides an opportunity for contestants to perform contemporary or popular repertoire in styles outside traditional classical literature. This division encourages stylistic interpretation and musical expression while maintaining appropriate performance standards.

• Open to instrumental contestants participating in the festival.
• Repertoire difficulty should align with the contestant’s Solo Division level when also entering Solo.
PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
• Contestants perform two selections during adjudication.

The Hobbyist Division is designed for students and adults who wish to participate in the festival in a non-competitive, supportive environment. This division emphasizes musical enjoyment, personal growth, and performance experience without the pressure of strict competitive requirements.
Participants perform contrasting selections and receive adjudication focused on encouragement, musical development, and overall presentation.
ELIGIBILITY• Open to both students and adult participants
• May be entered on any instrument offered within the festival
• Participants are not required to follow standard competitive progression levels
• Ideal for those seeking performance experience outside of the competitive track
PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
• Perform two contrasting selections
• Repertoire should reflect either classical or teaching pieces appropriate to the performer’s level
• Performance is adjudicated but structured to support growth and confidence
REPERTOIRE GUIDELINES
• No required test piece list
• Selections may include:

• Pieces should demonstrate contrast in style, tempo, or character

AUDIENCE POLICY
• Audience is permitted during Hobbyist Division performances
• Audience members must remain respectful and seated during performances
• Rooms may not be cleared for individual performers
AWARDS & SPECIAL RULES
• Participants receiving a Superior rating will be awarded a trophy
• This division is non-competitive (no placement rankings such as 1st, 2nd, or 3rd)
• Focus is on individual achievement and musical growth
REQUIRED MATERIALS

The Theory Bee is an academic event designed to test students’ knowledge of music theory, notation, and musicianship.
FORMAT
Students answer a series of timed questions across six categories.
Correct answers earn colored ribbons.
Question categories include:
• True/False
• Multiple Choice
• Short Fill-in-the-Blank
• Aural Perception
• Extended Fill-in
• Notation or advanced theory question
TIME LIMITS
Each question has a specific time limit ranging from 20 seconds to 1 minute.
PASS OPTION
• Contestants may pass one question without penalty.
• A passed question cannot be revisited later.
RULES
• Students may enter any level appropriate for their age and training.
• Gold medal winners must advance to the next level the following year.
• Pencil and paper will be provided.
• Students may not bring notes or reference materials.
ADJUDICATION
The Theory Bee is non-competitive, focusing on individual achievement rather than ranking students against one another.

The Music Quiz Bowl is a team-based academic competition that tests students’ knowledge of music theory, history, aural skills, and musicianship. Teams compete in multiple rounds of timed questioning designed to challenge musical understanding and quick recall. The event encourages collaborative learning and provides students with an engaging way to deepen their theoretical and historical musical knowledge.
ELIGIBILITY
• Teams consist of three to four members.
• There is no limit on the number of teams that may enter from a studio.
• All team members must also participate in the festival Solo Division.
• There is no age limit for participants.
• Team classification is determined by the highest Solo Division level represented on the team.
TEAM PARTICIPATION RULES
• A contestant may participate on only one team.
• A Class D entrant may participate on either:-
an E–F–G team, or
-
a B–C–D team.
-
An E–F–G team may include only one Class D participant.
CLASSIFICATION LEVELS
Teams are classified according to the Solo Division levels of the participants.
• LEVEL I
EFG Solo participants (one Class D entrant permitted per team)
• LEVEL II
BCD Solo participants
• LEVEL III
A through Virtuoso Solo participants
COMPETITION FORMAT
• Preliminary rounds begin Friday afternoon.
• The number of teams entered determines Friday scheduling.
• Oral questioning elimination round may occur Friday from 2:00–3:00 PM if required.
• The three highest individual scores from each team are used to determine advancement to semi-final rounds.
• Semi-final rounds occur on Friday and may include up to four teams per level.
• Final rounds are held on Saturday for Level I, Level II, and Level III teams.
QUESTION FORMAT
Each round consists of a set number of questions.
• Teams have 10 seconds to answer each question.
• If a team misses a question, the opposing team may choose to:-
accept the same question, or
-
request a new question.
If the opposing team accepts the question:
• The question will not be repeated.
• The team has 5 seconds to answer.
QUESTION CONTENT
Questions may include topics related to:
• music history
• music theory
• aural perception
• general musicianship
The difficulty level of questions corresponds to the team’s classification level.
STUDY MATERIALS
A collection of core questions used during the past ten years is available to all studios upon request from the Festival Secretary.

LEVEL I EXPECTATIONS
Students should be able to:
• Name notes on the lines and spaces of G and F clef
• Identify melodic intervals of minor 2nd, Major 2nd, Major 3rd
• Write those intervals above a given note
• Identify half steps and whole steps
• Identify Major and minor triads, including sharp and flat names
• Convert minor triads to major and vice versa
• Identify Major key signatures up to four sharps and four flats
• Write the rest or note equivalent for given rhythmic values
• Complete measures using a single note or rest in meters such as:-
6/8, common time, 2/4, 3/8, 3/4
Students should also know the following terms:-
